In February, there was a class registration period for the 2023 spring semester. The registration lasted for five days from February 6th to 10th for undergraduates, and there were also registration periods for transfer students on February 21st and for freshmen from February 23rd to February 24th. However,some voices were raising an issue about the registration system. The biggest problem was the lack of an absolute Table of Organization (T.O) of departments, especially for large departments such as the Department of Business Administration, Department of Electrical Engineering, and Department of Computer Science Engineering. The reasons for the lack of T.O are various; they are the lack of division classes due to the deficiency of professors and, the increase of change of major study students or double major students without increasing class T.O. Furthermore, there are some prerequisite courses for classes, so if a student misses the course, he or she has to take course next semester or next year.
Student A, a junior in the Department of Computer Science Engineering, said “I think several problems exist; the T.O is set up low comparing of the department students, and insufficient response of the department office. In my case, to apply for additional classes, I had to leave the time for the subject, so I applied for cancellation, but it was not canceled due to an error in the server, and I submitted a course application to the department office on the first day of the application date without knowing this fact. I inquired because the subject I applied for additional classes did not appear on the e-class until the period passed, but I was unable to take the subject because there were already other subjects at the time when the subject entered. The first problem is that even if there is a problem with applying for additional classes, he/she has not been contacted to correct it within the period. The second problem is that the department office staff consistently answered, “I do not know anything, so ask the head of the department directly. I think increasing the T.O of the department is the most necessary part, and the university must secure resources for the stable server operation during the class registration period.” Of course, there is an extra method to register classes; students have to send an e-mail to department professors with the reason they need to take this class in this semester and visit department office with submitting an application. However, even though extra class registratoin exists, not everyone who submitted an e-mail and an apllication can register the class. Since it is certainly up to professors whether they approve students in their class, a few students still failed to register classes.
The problems of the current class registration system of department operation exist. The Dongguk Post hopes the problems will be quickly fixed and situation will get better.
