Graduation Exhibition of the Buddhist Arts Majors Lit Up the Campus

   From November 8th to 14th, an exhibition of the graduation works of the Buddhist Art Majors was held at Dongguk University. Many people visited the gallery from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. and enjoyed the beautiful paintings.

   Buddhist art is the essence of the Eastern culture, and it is also widely affected by Korean culture. Dongguk University has established its major in Buddhist Art, based on its Buddhism ideals. In addition, Buddhist Art is included in a major course of the Department of Fine Arts. It has a goal of modernizing and popularizing Buddhist arts. Preserving and researching Buddhist cultural properties is also another important educational goals.

   The graduation works show various themes, such as the painting of Buddha preaching on Vulture Peak, Amitabha Buddha Preaching and Painting of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. It was drawn with concern of the manifestation of discord in common. Paintings were painted on the base of canvas with various ingredients such as ink, powder, and gold. It took a year to complete it, since there were lots of things to consider while drawing each line and colors.

   We are living in the era of cultural contents and pursuing a new and beautiful life. Art is the concrete representation of the whole culture. Art makes our lives more valuable. As it is based on creativity which induces change in the spiritual fields of mankind. With the revolution of technology, all fields of education are changing dramatically. Art should also actively cope with the change, which is caused by an explosive development of media.
