Dongguk University has several institutions to develop its five core competencies: “Creative Convergence, Digital,Self-Development, Communication Cooperation, and Global Citizens.” Each institution exists for the university life of Donggukians and conducts various activities, but some students are not aware of the existence of these institutions.
Kim Beom-ju, a sophomore in the department of Computer Science Engineering said, “I know that Dongguk University has several centers that provide some extracurricular activities or educational programs by some messages from our school, but I do not know exactly what events they proceed or where they are. I was interested about programs that might be good to know or drew my attention, but I did not look for it deeply.”
The Dongguk Post would like to introduce remarkable institutions of Dongguk University that might help you have a worthwhile university life after reading it.
There is a Dongguk University Industry-Academic Cooperation Group
First, Dongguk University’s Industry-Academic Cooperation Group is an institution that overall supports Dongguk University’s research and industry-academic cooperation. It was established to strengthen its research capabilities and take the lead as a research and industry-academic cooperation-oriented university.
Under the division of the head of the industry-academic support department, the head of the start-up technology department, and the head of the state-run business headquarters, “the start-up incubation center,” “the start-up promotion center,” “the field practice support center,” and “the LINC 3.0 project group” belong to industry-academic cooperation group. Additionally, a considerable number of other centers exist within the Industry-Academic Cooperation Group.
Dongguk University’s Start-Up Promotion Center operates a preliminary start-up package-specialized program and operates a Makerspace. Dongguk University Start-Up Incubation Center is a center that provides opportunities for prospective founders or early start-ups within five years of their start-ups to move into the start-up incubation center. The start-up education center is responsible for operating start-up education programs and selecting, and fostering start-up clubs.
The field training support center and IPP business group are institutions that support Industry Professional Practice (IPP) field training and operate a field training system. They support a field training semester and a program combined work and studying. The field training semester is an educational curriculum that operates practical training by company with the related field of student’s major for a semester and give credit to the student. It allows upper limit to have credit to nine or twelve. And it also provides seasonal session semester field training. The program combined work and studying is being operated by IPP business group; it is a program that a company hires a student as a learning worker who wants to get a job in the company, and provides systematic educational training with the university. The company selects learning workers who are in their sixth-semester, through the Off the Job Training (Off-JT) in seventh-semester and On the Job Training (OJT) in the rest semester, the employment is linked up.
The Leaders in Industry-university Cooperation (LINC) 3.0 project group was selected as the third-stage industry-academic cooperation leading university development project in 2022 and is taking the lead in creating an environment that connects “university-industrial companies-global” under the vision of “contributing to future industry development.” It also operates a capstone design program and a capstone design value-up program which discovers and supports ideas leading to concrete results.
Moreover, from November 23rd to 24th, the Industry-Academic Cooperation festival was held at central library, New Engineering Building, and Wonheung Hall. There were achievement exhibitions such as capstone value-up program award-winning work, industry-academic cooperation co-research achievement exhibitions. Also, there were programs for students such as field training experience exposition international (EXPO), start-up education forum, start-up question and answer (Q&A) and networking, and lectures of staff of broadcasting company or advertising company.
Students can get help from Dongguk University Counseling Center
If the Industry-Academic Cooperation Group is an institution that strives for on-campus development from the school’s point of view, Dongguk University Counseling Center is providing more direct help to students. Counseling center is an institution that provides counseling to Donggukians about adapting to college life, emotions, interpersonal relationships, studies, and careers to help them have a rewarding and happy college life. Counseling center operates group counseling programs, peer counseling programs, and psychological tests.
Counseling center is operated between 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on weekdays during the semester and between 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. on weekdays during vacation. Since it is operated on a pre-booking basis, you should call Counseling center before visiting. It is located on the first floor of the A-dong. Psychological tests can usually be obtained at a cost of 3,000 won per undergraduate or graduate student but are currently temporarily free of charge. Psychological tests are not necessarily offline, and both online and offline are possible, so you can enjoy benefits without place and time constraints. Due to the situation of COVID-19, it is being operated as an advanced reservation system. If you want to visit the center or apply the counceling or psychological examinations, you should call to the center before. The center also offers a psychological support program for students who have been psychologically hurt by the recent Itaewon tragedy.
Counseling center is also operating a peer mentoring activity called U-Peers. It stands for “University Peers Counsellor,” and it is a peer consultant program that friends around of us can experience with interest and worries in college life. They are doing a psychological counseling, including promoting psychological counseling and peer mentoring activity. They conduct activities to help with consulting peers who are suffering maladjustment of university life periodically. Also, through counselling education, it is possible to develop the capability for preliminary counselors. If you have some interest about counselor, it would be helpful to apply U-Peers.
Lee, a sophomore in the department of Computer Science Engineering, who has the experience of using the services counseling center said, “It was really helpful that I could get psychological counseling for knowing myself better for free. If I got the same psychological counseling outside of school, I think I had to pay more for it. As a Dongguk University student, I am going to use the services of school institutions wisely while in school.”
Dongguk University is conducting research and industry-academic cooperation projects centered on the Industry-Academic Cooperation Group. It provides students directly with helpful activities such as start-up, field training, and capstone design project support. It also helps students who have difficulties in school life or having career-related and psychological difficulties through the counseling center.
